SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALES

These gentle giants are the most sighted whales in Hermanus. Their curious nature brings them close to shore, making them a favourite among whale watchers. Two key characteristics stand out from afar, their V-shaped blow and their square-shaped flipper that so often breaks the water’s surface. Up close, rough patches of skin on their heads are clearly visible.

BRYDE'S WHALES

Though less common, Bryde's whales can occasionally be spotted in the area. These whales are typically more elusive, staying further offshore. They can be identified by their sleek bodies and a unique dorsal fin that curves backward, and a distinctive low, bushy blow.
